Während ihr Debüt „Youth Hunt“ die Auseinandersetzung von THE HOMESICK mit Glauben und pastoralem Leben markierte, führt ihr zweites Album „The Big Exercise“ die Band auf geerdetere, greifbarere Gefilde. Der Titel ist einer Passage aus der Scott-Walker-Biografie „Deep Shade Of Blue“ entnommen, und das Album ist ein konzentrierter Versuch, die Körperlichkeit ihrer Musik auf neue Weise zu erkunden. In den ersten, prägenden Jahren wurde das niederländische Trio oft der Trickbetrügerei bezichtigt. Van der Velde, Woudwijk und Elgersma, die aus der friesischen Gemeinde Dokkum stammen, umwarben Spiritualität mit ihren nonkonformistischen Launen. Für Außenstehende war folglich nur schwer erkennbar, ob die Band sich selbst auf die Schippe nahm oder ob sie sich wirklich als heillose Romantiker entlarvten.
While their debut „Youth Hunt“ marked THE HOMESICK’s exploration of faith and pastoral life, their second album „The Big Exercise“ takes the band into more grounded, tangible territory. The title is taken from a passage in the Scott Walker biography „Deep Shade Of Blue“, and the album is a focused attempt to explore the physicality of their music in new ways. In their early, formative years, the Dutch trio were often accused of trickery. Van der Velde, Woudwijk and Elgersma, who hail from the Frisian community of Dokkum, courted spirituality with their non-conformist whims. Consequently, it was difficult for outsiders to see whether the band was taking themselves for a ride or whether they were really exposing themselves as hopeless romantics.
